Our Vision

The long-term development vision for Meherpur can be synthesized around its strengths, historical significance, and ongoing governmental plans:

Agricultural Excellence and Modernization To transition to a model district for climate-resilient, diversified, and commercial agriculture. This includes promoting high-value crops, supporting agroforestry practices, and strengthening the agricultural supply chain to increase farmers' income.

Multimodal Transportation supported by Ports and Terminals that is Smart and Sustainable The long-term vision is to transform Meherpur from a predominantly agricultural district to an efficient Agro-Processing and Logistics Hub within Bangladesh's western economic corridor, leveraging smart and green infrastructure.

Disaster and Climate Change Resiliency The vision for Disaster and Climate Change Resiliency in Meherpur is to transform the district from being vulnerability-exposed (especially to drought and urban flooding) into a model of Climate-Smart Resilience, where its core economic sector – agriculture - is secured and its communities are prepared for future climate shocks.

Sustainable and Ecologically friendly Solid Waste Management and Promotion based on Recycling The ultimate goal is to minimize waste sent to a landfill through source segregation, aggressive recycling, and converting biodegradable waste into valuable resources.

Access to Drinkable Water and Sanitation The vision for Meherpur's Water and Sanitation sector must be aligned with the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): Universal and Equitable Access to Safe and Affordable Drinking Water and Sanitation for All.

Multi-tiered Drainage System and Management that is Interconnected A vision for a Multi-tiered and Interconnected Drainage System and Management for Meherpur could be framed around the principles of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Climate Resilience.

Renewable Source of Energy The core of the vision is to leverage Meherpur's abundant sunshine and agricultural production to achieve energy self-sufficiency and promote sustainable development.

Waterbody, Ecological, and Natural Habitat Preservation and Restoration To establish Meherpur as a model district where healthy, interconnected natural ecosystems—including rivers, beels, floodplains, and forests—are successfully protected, restored, and managed in partnership with local communities, ensuring water security, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience for all.

Conversion of Rural Marketplaces and Growing Areas into Important Hubs for Trade, Commerce, and Civic Services To transform rural marketplaces and their surrounding production areas into vibrant, multi-functional economic and civic hubs that anchor sustainable local economies, enhance social connectivity, and deliver modern public and commercial services, thus stemming rural-to-urban migration and fostering balanced regional growth.

Preservation and Restoration of Historical and Cultural Resources with A Focus on Tourism To position local historical and cultural resources as a "Living Heritage Corridor," where authentic preservation, adaptive reuse, and immersive cultural experiences drive a regenerative and community-led tourism economy, ensuring the heritage remains vibrant, accessible, and an engine for local prosperity.
